What makes Godolphin & Latymer (often abbreviated G&L) one of London’s Top Girls’ Schools? Read this blog to uncover more about one of North London’s most loved schools. We break down history and ethos, while also offering admissions tips and tutoring advice.

About Godolphin & Latymer: Location and School Life

  • G&L can be found in Hammersmith, West London.

  • It is an independent day school for girls aged 11 to 18. The school has approximately 800 students.

  • In addition to rigorous academics, it offers girls numerous opportunities and support for personal growth. It fosters bright and curious young women through excellent pastoral care.

  • In sixth form, students can choose between A-level and IB pathways.

    • The IB, or International Baccalaureate, is an increasingly popular choice for students aged 16 and above. It enables them to develop skills, including critical thinking and problem-solving, and instils in them a global outlook.

    • It prepares students well for higher education and a rapidly evolving modern world.

    • The curriculum is also broader than A-level offerings.

  • It prepares girls for the modern world by launching an Innovation and Leadership course, available at GCSE level, in September 2025.

  • The facilities are first-rate, featuring 18 practice rooms, a recording studio, a Music library, a theatre, a climbing wall, and a dance studio.

  • Girls can choose from a wide range of extracurricular activities, including science Olympiads, Robotics clubs, five choirs, and two a cappella groups, Rowing, Fencing, Karate, and much more.

History, Ethos, Results and Reputation: Why Families Choose G&L

History

  • Godolphin and Latymer actually began as Godolphin Boarding Shool for Boys in 1861. However, it did not thrive, and in 1905, a school for girls was established. Reflecting support from the Latymer Foundation, it became Godolphin and Latymer School.

  • It was a grammar school from 1944 to 1977, when it once again became an independent school.

  • The school is simultaneously rooted in history and forward-facing. It has always stood out as an exceptional school for girls.

  • It produces young women who are bold, resilient, and go-getters. They are the best version of themselves.

Results

  • Its results are a testament to the quality of the school, and help explain its stellar reputation.

  • GCSE

    • In 2025, 68.3% of GCSEs were awarded a grade 9, with 90.4% being 9-8.

    • In 2024, 69.3% of total exams were awarded a 9, with 92.8% of grades falling between 9 and 8.

  • A-Level

    • In 2025, 45.9% of A-Levels were A*, with 82.9% A*-A.

    • In 2024 40.5% of A-Levels were A* and 82.2% were A*-A.

  • IB

    • Godolphin & Latymer consistently ranks among the top 10 IB schools globally.

    • In 2025, 85% scored 40 points or more. 2 Students achieved the maximum 45 points! The average score is 41.7.

    • In 2024, 63% scored 40 points or more. The average score was 40, and the average subject grades consistently exceeded the world averages.

Universities

  • Given its impressive academics and rich extracurriculars, it’s no surprise that Godolphin leavers head to exceptional universities.

  • From the 2025 cohort, 13 went on to study at Oxford, four at Cambridge, four at Bocconi, three at Columbia, two at Harvard, one at MIT, and a range of other Russel Group, Ivy League, and European universities.

  • Such high success rates in sending applicants to competitive, prestigious universities are common for Godolphin, reflecting the quality of education and support the school provides.

How to Get Into Godolphin & Latymer: 11+ and 16+ Admissions Explained

11+

  • Godolphin and Latymer is part of the London consortium, a collection of 14 independent girls’ schools which require a single entrance exam.

  • It’s typically taken at your daughter’s current school at the end of November or the beginning of December.

  • Girls are required to sit a 100-minute assessment, which has a 30-minute break in the middle. They’re tested in maths, non-verbal reasoning, English, verbal reasoning, problem-solving, and creative comprehension.

  • Preparation should begin well in advance to ensure familiarisation, time for development, and to prevent overwhelm.

  • Quest assessments, which produce the exam, have an online familiarisation resource that can be accessed here.

  • Learn more about the requirements of the London consortium, past papers, exam preparation, and tutoring here.

  • If girls pass the entrance examination, they’ll be invited for an interview, typically in mid-January, and offers are made by mid-February.

16+

  • Godolphin and Latymer publish minimal details about their 16+ process.

  • Candidates are required to sit an entrance exam in early November. This is a Cognitive Abilities Test. Our blog on the CAT4 gives some information about what candidates may encounter.

  • Candidates who pass the test will be invited to interview. This is a chance “to explore their abilities, attitudes to learning, and interests”.

  • Interviews are typically in mid-November.

  • Invitations to interview are the result of strong performance in the respective entrance exams.

  • Thinking about how to prepare for the Godolphin interviews?

    • Your daughter needs to practice expressing herself clearly and concisely. She should practice answering unfamiliar questions, though rehearsed answers should be avoided.

    • There are also group tasks, so it’s essential that your daughter is confident speaking up among other girls.

  • Regarding what Godolphin looks for, passion for learning, genuine interest in the school and its offerings, and suitability for the G&L learning environment are all assessed.
