Highgate 4+ Assessments: A Parent’s Guide
If you’re considering applying to Highgate School for Pre-Prep entry, you’ve probably already heard about the 4+ assessments. Securing a place at Highgate is a highly competitive endeavour and understanding the admissions process is crucial for the best chance at success.
In this guide, we’ll explain exactly what the Highgate 4+ assessment involves, what Highgate School is looking for, how parents can prepare effectively and how expert support from U2 Tuition can help your child feel confident and ready.
What is the Highgate 4+ Assessment?
The Highgate 4+ assessment is part of the admissions process for children applying to Reception at Highgate School. Children must be turning 4 years old during the academic year (September - August) of application, (i.e. turning 5 the year they would join Highgate).
Unlike formal academic exams for the 7+/8+, the assessment is designed to evaluate:
Communication skills
Social interaction
Curiosity and engagement
Listening and concentration
Early language and number awareness
Confidence and independence
The school aims to identify children who will thrive in their environment, not children who have simply been heavily tutored.

How Competitive is Highgate School?
Highgate School is one of London’s most sought-after independent schools, with a reputation for academic excellence, outstanding pastoral care and exceptional facilities.
As a result:
Applications significantly exceed available places
Families often begin preparing early
The assessment process can feel intense for parents
There are approximately 60 places available for pre-prep each academic year and over 450 applicants.
What Happens During the Highgate 4+ Assessment?
Open Days & Registration:
The first steps in the 4+ assessment process for Highgate are open days and registration. Open Days are a great way for parents to visit the pre-prep and decide if it would be a good fit for their child (for 2027 entry, the open day takes place on 19th September 2026). Parents must register their child prior to the deadline stated on the school’s website (for 2027 entry, applications open on the 7th September 2026 and close on 25th September 2026).
An application fee of £210 is required alongside the registration form (refunded if child isn’t offered first-round assessment)
Deadlines are extremely strict and applications received before or after are often not accepted
Highgate aim to provide as many first-round assessment places as possible, however if over-subscribed, they use a certain criteria to decide which students are offered an assessment:
Children with siblings already attending Highgate are automatically offered a first-round assessment
Children of staff are automatically offered a first-round assessment
Occasionally, geographical location is also taken into account
Occasionally, a random ballot may take place depending on application numbers
If accepted for a first-round assessment, parents will be emailed in October with an invitation. Assessments must take place in-person.
First-Round Assessments:
Unlike assessment days for older year groups (e.g. 7+ and 8+), the 4+ assessment days take a much less academic approach. While formats can vary slightly year to year, children are typically assessed both on a one-to-one basis and in small groups through play-based activities and informal observation.
For 2027 entry, first-round assessment days take place between 2nd-20th November 2026.
Activities may include:
Storytelling and Conversation
Teachers may ask children verbal questions about a story or picture. They will do this to assess:
Use of vocabulary
Understanding and comprehension
Confidence speaking
Group Play
Teachers may ask children to work together on games or activities. This is to observe:
Ability to take turns
Sharing
Social skills and manners
Confidence
Ability to listen and / or follow instructions
Problem-Solving Tasks
Simple puzzles or matching exercises can help assess:
Focus and concentration
Logical thinking
Early numeracy / literacy awareness
Listening Activities
Children may follow instructions or complete simple tasks to evaluate:
Attention span
Processing skills
Independence
Ability to follow instructions
Second-Round Assessments:
A short-listed group of children are then invited back in January for second-round assessments (for 2027 entry, second-round assessments take place between the 5th-15th January 2027). These assessments follow the same format as the first-round and assess children on the same areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.
Final Decisions:
After both sets of assessments are complete, the Admissions Panel (usually the Head of Admissions, Principal of Pre-Prep and Deputy Principals of Pre-Prep) will meet to make their final decisions. Decisions made by the panel are final and no appeals are considered. Letters are then sent out to parent’s in late January, informing them of the outcome.

What Does Highgate Look For in 4+ Candidates?
During consultations, parents often ask us, “what exactly are Highgate looking for?” The answer is usually a combination of academic readiness and emotional maturity.
Highgate Typically Values:
Strong communication skills
Curiosity and enthusiasm
Ability to engage with adults and peers
Good listening skills
Confidence without overconfidence
Emotional resilience
Independence appropriate for age
Importantly, schools can often tell when preparation has become overly scripted. Natural confidence tends to perform far better than overly-rehearsed answers.
How to Prepare for the Highgate 4+ Assessment
Most families begin light preparation around 6–12 months before assessments, however this is completely dependent on each child’s ability.
As a general rule however, 6-12 months allows enough time to:
Build communication skills naturally
Improve confidence gradually
Avoid pressure or burnout
Top Tip:Every child develops differently, so preparation should always be personalised! At U2 Tuition, our specialist 4+ tutors put together a personalised preparation plan for each child, specifically designed to target precise areas for improvement. Preparation should feel positive, engaging, age-appropriate and most importantly, FUN!
Highgate is looking for children who are curious, communicative, emotionally ready and able to engage naturally with adults and peers. The areas below are where we recommend focussing attention:
Build Communication Skills
One of the biggest differentiators in 4+ assessments is communication. Children who are able to express themselves clearly, answer simple questions confidently and engage in conversation naturally often perform strongly.
Try to encourage:
Open conversations
Storytelling
Describing pictures
Asking questions
Top Tip: Reading together daily is one of the best ways to develop vocabulary naturally. Make sure to ask simple comprehension questions (e.g. ‘how do you think ______ might feel?’ or ‘why do you think _____ felt like that?’). This gently increases curiosity and emotional intelligence alongside comprehension skills and understanding.
Encourage Independence
At 4+, schools are assessing school readiness as much as academic ability. Independent children often appear more confident and settled during assessments.
Practise activities that involve your child taking control:
Putting on coats and shoes
Following simple instructions
Tidying up independently
Speaking confidently to adults
Top Tip: These skills matter much more than many parents realise! At the 4+, schools often love children who are confident and willing to try things on their own rather than relying heavily on adult assistance.
Develop Social Confidence
Many children are confident at home but become shy in unfamiliar situations or with unfamiliar adults.
Help by encouraging:
Ordering food themselves
Greeting adults politely
Answering simple questions directly
These small moments build enormous confidence over time. Confidence around other children and adults is essential as it allows them to develop skills such as:
Sharing
Waiting their turn
Joining activities confidently
Top Tip: Playdates, group classes and nursery interaction can be great ways to help children become comfortable around their peers. Make sure to always encourage good manners (e.g. sharing and turn taking) alongside listening skills.
Keep Learning Play-Based
This is arguably the most important part… at age 4, learning should still feel fun!
Avoid excessive worksheets or rigid drilling of academic materials. Instead focus on:
Games
Stories
Role play
Creative activities
Gentle puzzles
Top Tip: Over-preparing or focussing too heavily on academics can cause pressure and stress for children. Highgate specifically looks at the whole child, rather than just their ability to count or recall phonics. Keeping the process calm, balanced and positive is essential in children showing the best of themselves on the day!
Avoid Creating Pressure or Anxiety
Parents naturally want the best for their child but children are highly sensitive to stress. If preparation becomes tense or overly performance-focused, confidence can drop quickly.
Try To:
Keep sessions short and positive
Praise effort rather than perfection
Avoid constant correction
Celebrate progress
Maintain balance with free play
Work with a specialised tutor to find the perfect balance
