St Paul's 7+ Admissions Process & Timeline
Understanding the St Paul’s 7+ admissions process is key for parents planning ahead. Below we have outlined the different steps in the admissions process and key dates for 2027 entry:
Open Days & Registration for the St Paul’s 7+ Exam
Open days are organised in small groups throughout the school term. This gives prospective parents a chance to witness a normal school day at St Paul’s and ask any questions regarding admissions and assessments. It’s also a great chance to see whether the school would be a good fit for the child. St Paul’s also usually hold a larger, more specific 7+ open morning in November. More information regarding open days can be found on the school’s website: HERE
Parents must then register their child in advance, usually during Year 1 (for 2027 entry parents can register their child from February 5th 2026 when they are in Year 1). Parents are required to fill in an online application form and pay the non-refundable registration fee (for 2027 entry the registration fee is £240).
Registration for 2027 entry closes September 25th 2026.
First Round: St Paul’s 7+ Assessment Papers
The first stage of the St Paul’s 7+ exam take place in mid/late November, (for 2027 entry the 7+ assessment takes place on Saturday 21 November 2026). This stage involves written papers in three disciplines: English, Maths and Reasoning.
English & Dictation
Students are desired to not only have a good understanding of the Year 2 National Curriculum for English, but be working above and beyond the standard expectations. The English assessment often includes aspects of word reading and comprehension found in the Year 3 National Curriculum.
As part of the English paper, boys are also required to sit a dictation exercise, testing their understanding of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Maths
Similarly to the English assessment, boys are expected to have a solid understanding of the Year 2 Maths curriculum, but the exam may also contain higher level elements often seen in the Year 3 curriculum. Students will need to be able to confidently:
Use the four arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
Use number facts and place value
Solve missing number problems.
Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 3, 5 and 10 multiplication tables
Use appropriate working out and mental solutions when necessary
Understand shape, space, measure and time
Solve puzzles and number-based problems
Reasoning
St Paul’s do not provide any practice materials for their assessments, however do acknowledge that the Reasoning questions are weighted according to age. Reasoning assessments tend to include questions covering:
Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning
Logical thinking and problem solving
Understanding of vocabulary and word problems
St Paul’s also state that elements of comprehension are included in the Reasoning paper, assessing how students are able to search for information in the text and infer meaning.

Second Round: St Paul’s 7+ Interviews and Group Tasks
Should boys be successful in the first round of assessments, they will be invited back for the Group Task day a few weeks later. In small groups, boys will sit a Maths lesson, English lesson and Problem Solving group task. During these lessons / group tasks teachers will be watching how the students think, communicate and interact with others in a more natural setting.
Group tasks are usually informal and age-appropriate. Children are placed in small groups and asked to complete an activity such as:
Solving a simple problem together
Discussing a topic or sharing ideas
Taking part in a creative task (e.g. storytelling or building something)
The focus is not on getting a “right” answer, but on how each child approaches the task. Examiners are typically looking for:
Clear and confident communication
The ability to listen to others
Willingness to contribute ideas
Cooperation and teamwork
Basic reasoning and explanation of thinking
Children who perform well tend to show a balance of confidence and collaboration, engaging with the task while being respectful and responsive to others.

Offers and Final Decisions
During late November / early December, selected students are invited for classroom visits (for 2027 entry classroom visits are between 24th November and 3rd December 2026).
The final outcome is then sent to parents via email in early December (for 2027 entry, final offers will be sent on 4th December 2026).
Parents then have until the end of January 2027 to accept their child’s place (for 2027 entry, offers must be accepted by 28th January 2027).
How Competitive Is the St Paul's 7+ Exam?
With only 72 places available each year, St Paul’s 7+ exam is extremely competitive, with far more applicants than available places.
This level of competition is driven by several key factors:
A strong academic reputation and high standards
A well-established pathway to St Paul's Senior School
A limited number of 7+ places
Increasing demand from families across London
As a result, the St Paul’s 7+ admissions process is selective at every stage, with many candidates filtered out early on.
This is why early preparation is so important. Starting ahead of time allows children to build strong foundations gradually, rather than relying on last-minute pressure. With structured support from U2 Tuition, students can develop the academic skills, confidence and independent thinking needed to succeed in the St Paul’s 7+ admissions process.

The school looks for children who show:

High potential for academic success
Curiosity and enthusiasm for learning
Good problem-solving skills
Confidence in expressing ideas
The ability to engage with new challenges
Great communication and inter-personal skills
How to Prepare for the St Paul's 7+ Exam
Start Early and Build a Routine
One of the most effective ways to prepare for the St Paul’s 7+ exam is to start early - ideally 6–12 months in advance.
Rather than intensive last-minute preparation, aim to:
Set a consistent weekly study routine
Keep sessions short and focused (20–30 minutes)
Build skills gradually over time
This helps children develop confidence without feeling overwhelmed.
Strengthen Core Maths Skills
Maths plays a key role in the St Paul’s Juniors 7+ assessment, particularly problem-solving and logical thinking.
Focus on:
Number bonds and arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
Word problems and logical thinking
Explaining how answers are reached and showing working out
Encouraging your child to talk through their reasoning is especially valuable, as it builds deeper understanding.
Develop Strong Reading and Comprehension
A solid foundation in reading is essential for success in the St Paul’s 7+ exam.
To support this:
Read regularly with your child
Ask questions about characters, events and meaning
Encourage them to explain answers in full sentences
This improves both comprehension and verbal confidence alongside encouraging a more analytical style of thinking.
Practise Creative and Structured Writing
The St Paul’s 7+ exam often assesses a child’s ability to write clearly and creatively.
Parents can help at home by:
Practising short story writing based on prompts (visual images or sentence starters can be great for this!)
Focusing on developing a clear story structure (beginning, build up, middle, resolution, end)
Encouraging descriptive language and imagination (schools are placing greater value on use of language techniques in 7+ writing tasks)
Regular, low-pressure practice builds both skill and confidence.
Prepare for Group Tasks and Independent Thinking
The St Paul’s 7+ admissions process may include informal group assessments, where children are encouraged to think independently.
Support this by:
Asking open-ended questions at home
Encouraging your child to express their opinions
Practising simple conversations about their interests
Encouraging good manners, turn taking and patience
This helps children feel more comfortable speaking with confidence and interacting with peers in an appropriate manner.
Keep Preparation Positive and Balanced
While the St Paul’s Juniors 7+ exam is competitive, maintaining a positive approach is crucial, as over-preparation can lead to stress on the day.
Try to:
Keep learning engaging and varied
Celebrate progress, not just results
Avoid putting too much pressure on performance
