For many families across London, applying to James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS) represents a significant and emotional step in their child’s educational journey. JAGS has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence, pastoral care and a vibrant co-curricular programme, making it one of the most sought-after independent girls’ schools in the city. Naturally, this makes the 7+ (Year 3) entry point both highly competitive and widely discussed among parents.

This guide aims to provide a deeper, clearer understanding of the process, breaking down each stage while also offering realistic insight into what the school is truly looking for. Whether you are just beginning to explore options or already preparing your child, having a well-rounded perspective can make the journey feel far more manageable and that’s where U2 Tuition is here to help!

What Is the JAGS 7+ Exam?

The 7+ entry point is one of the primary ways girls join the JAGS Junior School.

The admissions timeline usually begins well in advance of entry. Registration tends to open in early autumn, often around September and closes by early November (see TIMELINE). While this may seem early, it reflects the level of interest in the school and the large pool of applicants each year.

Once registered, families are kept informed about the next steps, including assessment dates and what to expect. Luckily, JAGS tries to communicate clearly and transparently throughout the process, guiding prospective families through and helping to reduce uncertainty for both parents and children.

It’s also worth noting that JAGS welcomes applications from a wide range of educational backgrounds, including both state and independent schools. This diversity is reflected in the student body and is something the school actively values.

Visits

Before applying, attending a JAGS open day is one of the most valuable steps you can take. These events offer a first-hand look at the school’s environment, ethos and daily life.

At a typical open day, families can:

  • Tour the Junior School facilities

  • Meet teachers and current pupils

  • Hear directly from the Head and admissions team

  • Get a sense of the school’s academic, extra-curricular and pastoral approach

For children, this experience can also be incredibly helpful. Visiting the school beforehand can not only to assess a good fit, but can also make assessment days feel far less intimidating as the setting will already feel familiar.

Open mornings usually take place throughout the Summer and Autumn terms, alongside smaller, more frequent group tours.

For 2027 entry, the Open Mornings for the Junior School take place on Thursday 4 June, Saturday 3 October and Wednesday 14 October 2026.

Places can be booked via JAGS’ website HERE

Registration

The JAGS 7+ registration process is the first official step in securing a place for your child and it’s important not to miss the deadline. Registration typically opens in early September when prospective students are in Year 2 and closes by early November for entry the following academic year.

To register, parents need to complete an online application form via the school’s admissions portal and pay a registration fee (for 2027 entry the registration fee is around £125 for UK based applicants. Overseas application fees may be higher).

Because JAGS is highly competitive, late applications are rarely accepted, so staying organised is key.

Applications for September 2027 entry open on Monday 7th September 2026 with a deadline of Friday 6th November.

First Round: JAGS 7+ Academic Assessments

Wondering what to expect from the JAGS 7+ exam? The assessment process at 7+ is designed to be thorough but fair, allowing each child multiple opportunities to demonstrate her abilities. It typically takes place in January (for 2027 entry first round assessments take place on Thursday 7th January 2027) and is divided into two main stages:

During the first stage, candidates take part in a series of structured assessments. These usually include:

  • Mathematics: Covering core numeracy skills such as addition, subtraction, problem-solving and logical thinking. Questions often go slightly beyond the standard Year 2 curriculum to test deeper understanding.

  • English (Comprehension and Creative Writing): This includes both reading comprehension and a short piece of writing. Children are usually asked to respond to a passage and write a short story, allowing examiners to assess vocabulary, grammar, spelling and creative ability.

  • Reasoning (computer-based Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning): These tasks evaluate logical thinking, pattern recognition and problem-solving ability. They are designed to assess potential as much as learned knowledge.

The atmosphere during this stage is intentionally calm and supportive. JAGS are aware that younger students perform best when they feel comfortable, so efforts are made to ensure the environment is calm and welcoming rather than intimidating.

Second Round: JAGS 7+ Interviews

Candidates who perform well in the initial assessments are invited back for a second stage (for 2027 entry, the Second Round Assessments take place on Monday 18th January 2027). Unlike some other schools offering group tasks, the second round for JAGS is often more personal and direct.

This stage may include:

  • An individual interview: Conducted by a member of staff in a friendly, conversational manner. The goal is to understand the child’s interests, personality and ability to engage in discussion.

  • Reading aloud: This helps assess fluency, confidence and comprehension skills.

  • More advanced mental maths or problem-solving activities: Often presented in a collaborative or discussion-based format rather than a formal test. Tests students’ ability to think quickly on the spot.

This second stage is particularly important because it allows the school to see beyond test scores. It’s where qualities like curiosity, resilience and enthusiasm really come into play.

Offers and Final Decisions

Offers are usually sent out to parents via email in late January (for 2027 entry offers are received on 28th January and offers must be accepted by Friday 5th February 2027).

How Competitive Is the JAGS 7+ Exam?

JAGS 7+ is highly competitive. With a limited number of places available each year (around 12 places) and a large number of applicants, the selection process is necessarily rigorous.

Many applicants will already have strong academic skills and many will have undertaken preparation or tutoring. What often differentiates successful candidates is not perfection but balance. Children who combine solid academic ability with confidence, enthusiasm and authenticity tend to perform well across both stages of the assessment.

For parents, this can be reassuring: the process is not about creating a “perfect candidate,” but about allowing your child’s genuine strengths to come through. With the right preparation and guidance, children can develop both the academic skills and self-assurance needed to succeed.

If you are considering support for your child’s 7+ journey, working with an experienced provider can make a significant difference. At U2 Tuition, our tutors have proven track record of student success in 7+ exams. Our tutors help children build confidence, master key skills and approach the JAGS assessment with clarity and confidence.

What Does JAGS Look For At 7+?

One of the most common misconceptions about competitive school admissions is that success is determined purely by academic performance.

While a strong academic foundation is essential, JAGS places equal importance on a more holistic profile, looking for children who also demonstrate confidence, curiosity, communication skills and genuine enthusiasm for learning.

The school is looking for children who demonstrate:

  • Intellectual curiosity: A genuine interest in learning, asking questions and exploring new ideas.

  • Engagement: The ability to focus, participate and show enthusiasm during activities.

  • Communication skills: Confidence in expressing thoughts clearly, even if not perfectly.

  • Adaptability: A willingness to try new things and cope with challenges.

  • Kindness and collaboration: Social awareness and the ability to work well with others.

In many ways, the school is assessing “future potential” rather than just current attainment. A child who is eager to learn and open to growth may stand out just as much as one with strong academic scores.

How to Prepare for the JAGS 7+ Exam

Preparation for the 7+ should be thoughtful and measured. At this age, children benefit far more from consistent, interactive learning than from intensive, high-pressure prep.

Some effective ways to support your child include:

  • Encouraging regular reading: Exposure to a variety of books helps build vocabulary, comprehension and imagination. Discussing stories together can deepen understanding.

  • Practising everyday maths: Simple activities like counting, measuring and solving real-world problems (e.g. shopping or cooking) can strengthen numeracy skills in a natural way.

  • Developing writing skills: Encourage your child to write short stories, letters or even keep a simple journal. The goal is to build confidence in expressing ideas.

  • Fostering curiosity: Answer questions, explore topics of interest and encourage your child to think independently.

  • Building confidence: Opportunities to speak, perform or present ideas (whether at home or in small groups) can help children feel more comfortable during interviews.

Most importantly, preparation should never come at the expense of a child’s well-being. A relaxed, confident child will almost always perform better on the day than one who feels pressured or overwhelmed.

Preparing for the JAGS 7+ exam requires a balanced approach. This means that the right kind of preparation is essential in making a meaningful difference. At U2 Tuition, we focus on nurturing a child’s natural strengths rather than over-coaching rehearsed and predicable answers. Through carefully designed sessions, we help build confidence, develop independent thinking and refine communication skills. This way, each child is able to present their best, most genuine self on the day!
